The Specific Antigens of Variants of Shigella Sonnei
It has been shown that phase variation of Sh. sonnei is accompanied by changes in morphology and antigenic structure. Two mutants of the Phase I organism (II(S) and II(R)), which were studied, elaborate somatic antigens which are immunologically identical. The purified lipocarbohydrate-protein antigens of the Phase I and II(S) microorganisms are chemically similar yet immunologically distinct a...
متن کاملSpecific detection of Shigella sonnei by enzyme-linked aptamer sedimentation assay
Development of potent new anti-Shigella agents for rapid and specific detection and treatment is of great importance. Aptamers, nucleic acid oligomers capable of specific binding to a wide range of non-nucleic acid targets, may be of value for this purpose. In the present study, we used a Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential enrichment (SELEX) process to select DNA aptamers that b...
متن کاملColicin typing of Shigella sonnei.
The colicin typing method for differentiating epidemic strains of Shigella sonnei was evaluated. Forty percent of the strains were untypable, but the method divides 60% of the strains into 15 established colicin types. The method has reasonably good reproducibility, but should not be interpreted with the same degree of confidence as some other characteristics such as serotypes. For this reason,...
متن کاملAmpicillin resistance of Shigella sonnei.
The ampicillin resistance of clinical isolates of Shigella sonnei is due to beta-lactamase production. Two kinds of resistance are found: low level, nontransmissible; and high level, tranmissible. The nontransmissible type of resistance results from a chromosomal mutation which increases the production of a beta-lactamase that hydrolyses cephalosporins relatively rapidly and gives cephalothin r...
متن کاملMacrolide-Resistant Shigella sonnei
Shigella sonnei UCN59, isolated during an outbreak of S. sonnei in January 2007, was resistant to azithromycin (MIC 64 mg/L). The isolate contained a plasmid-borne mph(A) gene encoding a macrolide 2 -phosphotransferase that inactivates macrolides. Emergence of the mph(A) gene in S. sonnei may limit usefulness of azithromycin for treatment of shigellosis.
